मत्स्यावतार (मत्स्य = मछली का) भगवान विष्णु का अवतार है जो उनके दस अवतारों में से प्रथम है। इस अवतार में भगवान विष्णु ने इस संसार को भयानक जल प्रलय से बचाया था। साथ ही उन्होंने हयग्रीव नामक दैत्य का भी वध किया था जिसने वेदों को चुराकर सागर की गहराई में छिपा दिया था।
The Matsya Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas (Mahapurana), and among the oldest and better preserved in the Puranic genre of Sanskrit literature in Hinduism. The text is a Vaishnavism text named after the half-human and half-fish avatar of Vishnu.
